Technical analysis uses historical price charts to forecast potential future market trends. Weekly charts are particularly useful for depicting long-term trends.

According to data from the London Stock Exchange Group (LSEG), UnitedHealth Group's stock price rose 80% between March and July, hitting a high of $461.62, marking the highest level in over a year. Subsequently, over the next two and a half months, the stock gave back about half of its gains and hit a five-month low of $362.60 on October 1.

Technical analysts refer to such pullbacks as "retracements," a common occurrence during upward trends. Analysts try to determine which chart levels might act as support during retracements—effectively a price floor—and where the stock may encounter resistance, which serves as a ceiling or cap to gains.

Analysts look for these levels in various ways. These include moving averages—which smooth out price fluctuations by calculating the average price over a specific period; historical highs and lows; and Fibonacci retracement levels. Fibonacci retracement is a mathematical calculation used to indicate the percent points to which a stock tends to pull back after major moves.

For UnitedHealth Group, one noteworthy sign is that its stock price recently stopped falling near the midpoint of the rally from this spring to this summer—namely, the widely watched 50% retracement. This level aligns with a series of highs and lows around the same region in September and October 2025, further reinforcing its significance and boosting the outlook for a rebound in UnitedHealth Group's stock price.

When analysts start to forecast potential rebound moves, they typically use tools that measure volatility and momentum to validate their views. Volatility reflects the magnitude of price swings, while momentum measures the strength with which prices move in a particular direction.

Bollinger Bands are one such tool. They consist of two lines above and below the moving average of the stock price, and the gap between these lines widens as price volatility increases.

Another tool is the Moving Average Convergence Divergence indicator (MACD). It shows whether buying pressure is increasing or decreasing by comparing moving averages over two different periods. A third is the Relative Strength Index (RSI), which measures the speed of recent price changes to indicate whether momentum is rising or falling. All three indicators suggest UnitedHealth Group is building upside momentum.

Based on this, UnitedHealth Group's stock price could climb to the $437-440 range, roughly aligning with some weekly highs in July. The next resistance is the 200-week moving average near $448. This is the average of prices over the last 200 weeks, and long-term investors closely monitor this indicator. If it breaks that level, the price could rise to the $455-460 range, close to the highs seen in July.

If it falls below $400, it would raise serious doubts about the stock's ability to rebound.

In response to an email seeking comment, UnitedHealth Group referred Reuters to the transcript of its October 13 earnings call—on which the company raised its 2026 profit outlook. CEO Stephen J. Hemsley said this move reinforced the company's confidence in achieving growth within the "13% to 16% long-term target growth range" for 2027 and beyond.

Charts show:

  • UnitedHealth Group's stock price rose 80% between March and July, then gave back half of those gains

  • Subsequent gains may target the $437-440 range, $448, and the $455-460 range

  • If it falls below $400, the current rally could be in jeopardy
