Fifth Third's Quarterly Profit Beats Views; CEO Highlights Strengths Amid 'More Volatile Environment'
10:49 AM EDT, 10/19/2026 (MT Newswires) -- Fifth Third Bancorp's (FITB) third-quarter profit topped Wall Street's estimates as net interest income rose, while its chief executive highlighted the bank's strengths amid macro headwinds and stiff deposit competition. The major regional bank's per-share earnings for the September quarter fell to $0.90 from $0.91 a year earlier, but surpassed the FactSet-polled consensus of $0.83. Revenue, expressed as the sum of net interest income and total non-interest income, surged to $3.28 billion from $2.31 billion, though it fell short of the $3.34 billion projected by analysts. Net interest income jumped 49% to $2.28 billion, while the Street expected $2.27 billion, driven mainly by the integration of recently-acquired regional lender Comerica. Sequentially, net interest income rose 3%. "The (sequential) increase was driven by organic loan growth, investment portfolio activity and continued fixed rate asset repricing, partially offset by higher deposit costs and tighter spreads in (commercial and industrial loans) and auto," Chief Financial Officer Bryan Preston said during an earnings conference call, according to a FactSet transcript. Shares of Fifth Third were up 1.4% in Monday trade, taking the stock's year-to-date gains to more than 9%. "Fifth Third's third quarter reflected the earnings power of the combined company," CEO Tim Spence said in a statement."Even while integrating Comerica, our adjusted return on tangible common equity and efficiency ratio improved from the second quarter, and credit performance remained stable. For the ongoing quarter, Fifth Third is projecting a 2.5% to 3.5% sequential growth in net interest income, which assumes a Fed funds rate of 4.25%. Last month, the Federal Open Market Committee raised the target range for the federal funds rate by 25 basis points to 3.75% to 4.00%, with policymakers looking at another rate hike possibly by yearend to cool persistent inflation. The outlook assumes a 25-basis-point Fed rate hike in December, Preston said. "We live in a more volatile world, and competition for deposits is heating up," Spence said. "Multiple sources of low-cost deposits and limited exposure to the borrowers most sensitive to higher rates give us flexibility regardless of the rate environment." Last week, Fifth Third rivals PNC Financial Services (PNC), US Bancorp (USB), and First Horizon (FHN) reported third-quarter adjusted earnings per share ahead of Wall Street's estimates, even as net interest income fell short of analysts' expectations. In a recent note, BofA Securities described the setup for US regional banks as tougher than it appears heading into the next earnings season, with stocks likely to continue to "languish" amid macroeconomic challenges.
