Anthropic Reports Revenue Surge in First Nine Months, Net Loss Widens

MT newswireMT newswire2026/11/02 17:07
01:07 PM EST, 11/02/2026 (MT Newswires) -- Anthropic said Monday in an amended initial public offering prospectus that revenue for the first nine months of 2026 increased more than 13-fold while its net loss widened due largely to revaluations of convertible promissory notes. The Claude chatbot developer said revenue for the nine months ended Sept. 30 rose 1,206% from a year earlier to $33.2 billion. The net loss per share widened to $50.10 from $13.90 in the year-earlier period. For the third quarter, Anthropic reported revenue of $16.96 billion, compared with $1.38 billion a year earlier. The net loss in the three months ended Sept. 30 was $23.29 billion, compared with $12.14 billion a year earlier. Anthropic disclosed about $895.4 billion in purchase commitments and lease obligations, substantially all of which relate to compute and infrastructure. The commitments include about $161.2 billion with Broadcom (AVGO), $121.3 billion with Alphabet's (GOOG, GOOGL) Google, $120.5 billion with Space Exploration Technologies (SPCX) and $110 billion with Amazon.com (AMZN). Anthropic said the larger net loss primarily reflected increases in the fair value of outstanding convertible promissory notes as the company's enterprise value rose. Compute and infrastructure expenses increased 329% from a year earlier to $18.8 billion during the first nine months of 2026. "As our compute and infrastructure capacity grows, the associated compute and infrastructure expenses have increased accordingly," the company said in the filing. However, compute and infrastructure expenses as a percentage of revenue declined to 57% in the first nine months of 2026 from 172% in the prior-year period. Anthropic publicly filed for an initial public offering last week with first-half financial results and updated the filing Monday with third-quarter figures. Truist Securities said last week that Anthropic's platform could act as both an innovation enabler and a competitive threat to traditional enterprise software vendors. "We believe the competitive implications will vary by application category as we believe software vendors with deeply embedded workflows, robust proprietary data moats, and complex industry-specific functionality are potentially better insulated from disruption," Truist said in a report. Last week, chipmaker Broadcom announced a $63 billion financing arrangement with Bank of America (BAC), Morgan Stanley (MS), Citigroup (C) and Blackstone (BX) through a newly formed special-purpose vehicle that will purchase AI accelerators and networking equipment for Anthropic. Deliveries are expected to begin in 2027
