Higher Borrowing Costs Squeeze Housing, With September Data Weak -- Market Talk
Dow Jones2026/10/28 13:500949 ET - High mortgage rates have suppressed demand in the housing market as September readings on pending home sales, builder sentiment and starts all came in weak. In addition, higher Treasury yields are tightening the screws by increasing financing costs for buyers and builders, Yardeni Research says in a note. Higher borrowing costs are clearly slowing the housing market, Oxford Economics says. But with activity already subdued, the slowdown is unlikely to significantly impact the overall economy, Oxford Economics adds. Family assistance is also an increasingly important bridge into homeownership. (jessica.coacci@wsj.com)
