Shares of Wendy's jumped after The Wall Street Journal reported that Nelson Peltz's hedge fund Trian Fund Management is offering to buy the fast-food chain for around $1.4 billion.
The stock climbed 17%, to $7.20, in premarket trading Wednesday. Through Tuesday's close, shares have lost roughly a quarter of their value year to date.
Trian, a longtime shareholder in Wendy's, is leading a group that has offered to pay $7.35 a share in cash to take the restaurant chain private, according to a letter sent to the company Wednesday that was viewed by the Journal.
The restaurant operator Flynn Group and the investment firms BlueFive Capital and Sixth Street Partners are working with Trian, according to the report, which cited people familiar with the matter.
Trian thinks Wendy's is at "a critical juncture," those people said. Trian believes the company requires significant capital investments and that the complex, multiyear turnaround it requires would be easier to execute as a private company, the Journal reported.
