Canada's Federal, Provincial Governments Tilt Toward Conservative Economic, Pro-Growth Policies, BMO Says

MT newswireMT newswire2026/10/27 11:08
07:08 AM EDT, 10/27/2026 (MT Newswires) -- Canada's federal and provincial governments are increasingly converging on conservative, growth-oriented economic policies, with right-of-centre parties now governing seven of the country's 10 provinces following this week's election result in British Columbia, according to a note from BMO Capital Markets. While the Liberals continue to govern federally, their policy agenda increasingly reflects conservative economic principles, with several measures echoing proposals put forward by the Conservative Party, wrote BMO in a Monday note. Considering the distribution of power between federal and provincial governments and the relative populations of each province, Canada hasn't experienced such a pronounced shift to the right since short-lived periods in the mid-1980s or the extended conservative era of the 1950s, said the bank. Although party priorities have changed over time, the broader political landscape increasingly reflects a conservative approach focused on economic growth across much of the country, added BMO.
