Why Is Bitcoin Stuck Near $80K as Strategy Diverts $205M to Preferred-Share Buybacks?

Bitcoin is currently facing pressure despite its recent recovery. The pioneer cryptocurrency is struggling to surge above $80,000 as market demand remains uncertain. This uncertainty has further increased as Michael Saylor’s Strategy spent $204.9 million buying back its preferred shares instead of purchasing more BTC. While the move has raised questions about the company’s near-term buying plans, it has also added to the prevailing concerns around the crypto’s future.

Bitcoin continues to face pressure and fails to move above $80,000. As of press time, the BTC price is marked at $79,680, down by 0.52% in a day. Over the past week and month, the coin has slipped by nearly 3% and 6%, respectively.

Notably, the current uncertainty is further amplified by Strategy’s pause in its Bitcoin purchases. The company has recently announced its decision to skip BTC purchases during the week of October 19 to 25. Instead, the Bitcoin treasury company is spending money on buying back its STRC preferred shares. Reportedly, the firm spent about $204.9 million on the stock buyback program.

Strategy’s October 26 SEC filing revealed that the company made no BTC buys between October 19 and October 25. The BTC holdings remained unchanged at 848,517 coins, acquired for about $64.02 billion, at an average purchase rate of $75,446 per BTC.

While Strategy stood firm on its Bitcoin accumulation strategy since August 2020, the company has now reconsidered it. It is now repurchasing STRC shares instead of adding more crypto. Using a general-purpose USD cash balance, the company managed to fund the buyback. This indicated that Michael Saylor is currently focusing on managing the company’s capital structure rather than expanding its BTC portfolio.

As of now, Strategy has around $956.8 million available under its preferred-share buyback program. Its USD reserve stood at $4.83 billion as of October 25. Although the company has paused its Bitcoin purchases for now, it doesn’t mean that the firm has completely abandoned the strategy.

Now, the question is about Strategy’s potential Bitcoin purchases. It is uncertain whether the company is changing its spending priorities. With BTC trading near $80,000, its market price remains above Strategy’s average purchase price of $75,446. This means the company’s Bitcoin holdings are still worth more than their acquisition cost, based on the current price.

However, the company is now buying back preferred shares instead of purchasing more BTC, which suggests that Strategy is focusing on financial commitments. The company needs to manage its cash reserves and meet dividend payments while maintaining its large Bitcoin holdings. But this doesn’t mean that Strategy has lost its confidence in BTC.

Strategy’s decision to pause its Bitcoin purchases could reduce one source of buying demand in the market. At the same time, the impact could be limited compared with overall spot trading activity. If institutional demand continues despite Strategy’s move, it could give BTC some sort of relief.

This means that Strategy’s absence as a buyer does not automatically mean Bitcoin prices will fall. Other investors and institutions may continue to buy the asset. If demand improves, the Bitcoin price could surge.

For now, it is important to watch Strategy’s next moves. If the company continues to stay away from Bitcoin for a long period, it could have a significant impact on crypto.

Buyers Disappear Amid AI Sell-off! Goldman Sachs Trading Desk Phones Flooded With Calls But No Takers, Hedge Funds and Retail Investors Withdraw Together

Goldman Sachs traders stated that Wednesday was one of the busiest trading days for their equities desk this year, while Thursday was the complete opposite. Investors were asking how much further the market could fall, but there was almost no buying activity; some hedge funds began selling stocks they had just bought on Wednesday. UBS data showed that Thursday's selling pressure mainly came from hedge funds. According to JPMorgan estimates, retail investors had a net sell-off of about $1.3 billion, marking the highest single-day volume in a year. The "fear index" VIX surged intraday to an eight-month high. Investors rushed to purchase protective options, and premiums for main equity index put options were twice the usual amount.
