Parker Lewis, author of “Gradually, Then Suddenly,” has argued that Bitcoin is poised to eventually settle all global payments. In a recent interview, Lewis pointed to the increasing burdens on the credit system, citing $107 trillion in global debt, and outlined how these factors could accelerate Bitcoin adoption for payment settlement.
Parker Lewis claims Bitcoin could process all global payments
Bank Failures and the Payment Revolution
Lewis explained that major bank closures in 2023 convinced him the payments infrastructure is Bitcoin’s most vital role, rather than custody or reserve functions. He noted that the banking instability showcased vulnerabilities in traditional finance and made decentralized alternatives more attractive to individuals and businesses alike.
Discussing merchant adoption, Lewis highlighted that businesses can bypass traditional card networks by accepting Bitcoin directly. He emphasized these advantages by stating that merchants avoid the typical 3% card processing fees and eliminate risks related to chargebacks.
Parker Lewis described the shift in payments as essential, stating that merchant adoption of Bitcoin means, “Fewer fees, no chargebacks, and a more direct payment system.”
This focus on direct payments, according to Lewis, could drive Bitcoin’s real-world usage beyond its perception as just an asset or reserve currency.
Debt, Macro Strain, and Dollar Relevance
Lewis also addressed the strain in the global credit system, citing over $107 trillion in worldwide debt—up starkly from $52 trillion in 2007. He said escalating interest rates, with mortgages above 7% and corporate refinancing costs at nearly 10%, signal deeper systemic stress.
He added that traditional tools of the Federal Reserve and the US Treasury are losing efficacy, leaving large-scale money creation as one of the only remaining responses to rising financial pressures.
According to Lewis, in such an environment, the dollar price of Bitcoin gradually becomes irrelevant as the system transitions to more direct digital settlements and away from depending on fiat currency denominations.
He claimed that “over time, as more payments are made through Bitcoin, the importance of its price in dollars will diminish.”
Lewis further critiqued the alignment issues between Bitcoin treasury companies and their investors, asserting that simply holding Bitcoin does not automatically drive long-term value or innovation.
Payments Infrastructure and Technical Debates
Debating the technical side, Lewis argued that Bitcoin’s real innovation comes through closing the value transfer loop and using payment networks, such as the Lightning Network, to provide scalable, instant settlements.
He also discussed the constraints of on-chain transaction capacity versus off-chain solutions like Lightning, suggesting that the payments architecture will need to evolve dramatically to reach the projected scale.
Mini dictionary: Lightning Network, a second-layer payment protocol for Bitcoin, enables faster and lower-cost transactions by creating off-chain channels that eventually settle on the main blockchain. It is seen as a critical tool for scaling Bitcoin to handle global payment volumes.
Lewis’s viewpoint has sparked further debate about Bitcoin’s long-term utility and the future of global payment settlements.
