Viasat advanced its NASA communications demonstration with the successful launch of the Maxwell spacecraft on Oct. 20, 2026.
The mission supports development of space-based communications services under two NASA Communications Services Project contracts totaling $81 million.
On-orbit testing will run for five months through March 2027, demonstrating Ka- and L-band relay services for low Earth orbit operators.
The technology aims to provide real-time mission data access and continuous spacecraft command capabilities for government and commercial operations.
The demonstration supports NASA’s preparations to retire its Tracking and Data Relay Satellite fleet.
