12:08 PM EDT, 10/20/2026 (MT Newswires) -- Albertans voted to remain part of Canada, with some 76% opposing the separation proposal in initial results on Tuesday, easing near-term political uncertainty, according to TD Economics in a note. However, more than 400,000 voters supported separation in Monday's non-binding referendum, highlighting persistent provincial grievances that remain unresolved, wrote TD in the note. The result offers greater near-term certainty for businesses and investors, with legislation preventing substantially similar proposals from being put to another vote for five years, said the bank. It provides an opportunity to resolve energy-rich Alberta's underlying grievances and strengthen investor confidence, especially in major capital projects that require long-term political and economic stability. The economic stakes are significant, with estimates suggesting separation-related uncertainty could cost Alberta CA$10 billion to CA$15 billion in foregone investment and CA$41 billion to CA$62 billion in annual output from higher trade costs, added TD. An Alberta Chamber of Commerce survey found that 44% of businesses were affected by the debate, with some projects delayed, scaled back or canceled. The focus now turns to whether greater political certainty can unlock investment, according to the bank. Advancing major infrastructure projects, diversifying trade and addressing labor-market needs will be key to supporting Alberta's long-term growth.
