Canadian Dollar Climbs as Alberta Vote Poses Little Threat, Rosenberg Research Says

MT newswireMT newswire2026/10/19 12:25
08:25 AM EDT, 10/19/2026 (MT Newswires) -- The Canadian dollar has strengthened to CA$1.4090 from CA$1.430 against the US dollar in less than a week, while markets have largely shrugged off Monday's Alberta's referendum, according to Rosenberg Research in a note. While the ballot addresses 10 issues, including immigration and constitutional reform, polling suggests only 22% support separation, wrote Rosenberg Research in a Monday note. High participation, particularly in advance voting, may strengthen the case for remaining in Canada, though the referendum is non-binding, said Rosenberg. The Canadian dollar has also gained support from a decline in market-implied expectations of a US Federal Reserve rate hike at the Oct. 27-28 meeting, with the probability now down to just 16%, added Rosenberg.
