Fifth Third Bancorp reported higher profit in the latest quarter, as the integration of its recent Comerica acquisition translated to major gains.
The parent company of Fifth Third Bank on Monday posted a third-quarter profit of $866 million, or 90 cents a share, compared with $649 million, or 91 cents a share, a year earlier. The company had about 917.1 million outstanding shares at the end of the recent quarter on a fully diluted basis, compared with about 670.9 million in the year-ago quarter.
Stripping out one-time items, earnings were $1.13 a share. Analysts polled by FactSet expected adjusted earnings of $1.10 a share.
Net interest income jumped 49% to $2.27 billion, largely thanks to the addition of Comerica, Fifth Third said.
Meanwhile, noninterest income was up 29% to $1.01 billion. Higher mortgage banking, commercial banking, and wealth and asset management revenue more than offset lower capital markets and consumer banking revenue, the company said.
The company's noninterest expense jumped 62% to $2.05 billion.
