Update: Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing in Talks With Elon Musk's Terafab Over Production

06:11 AM EDT, 10/15/2026 (MT Newswires) -- (Updates to include details on the company's planned production of its new 3-nanometer fab in Taiwan in the last two paragraphs.) Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing (TSM) is in talks to collaborate with Elon Musk's Terafab, his planned chip plant in the US, Chief Executive C. C. Wei told analysts and investors, according to a transcript of the company's Q3 2026 earnings call. "We send the teams to Texas to do all the evaluation. And we also talked to one of our customers who try to build a fab, Terafab," he said. "And we are discussing with them to see whether we can be utilizing that actual capacity also." Wei said his company must operate its fabrication plants in any alliance. But Musk said in a post on his X platform earlier this month that his companies will "build and run the fab" while TSMC may sublease a section, "but nothing more." In the earnings call, Wei said Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing is set to start volume production of its new 3-nanometer fab in Tainan, Taiwan in H1 2027. The company also decided to add one more 3-nanometer fab in Tainan, with volume production expected in H1 2028, the executive noted. The company is "executing well" on its global expansion plan of adding three new fabs to support demand for 3-nanometer technologies, with the fab in Arizona set to begin volume production in Q3 2027, Wei added.
