Stocks Mostly Down Pre-Bell as Traders Await Big Bank Earnings

MT newswireMT newswire2026/10/13 11:41
07:41 AM EDT, 10/13/2026 (MT Newswires) -- US equity futures were mostly trending lower on Tuesday as traders await the latest financial results of some of Wall Street's largest banks. The S&P 500 was down 0.2%, the Nasdaq 100 declined 0.5%, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.6% in premarket trading. The Dow finished Monday trading higher for the third consecutive session, while the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite closed in the red. Banking giants JPMorgan Chase (JPM), Goldman Sachs (GS), Wells Fargo (WFC) and Citigroup (C) are scheduled to report their third-quarter earnings before the bell. Bank of America (BAC) and Morgan Stanley (MS) are set to post their results on Wednesday. Earlier in October, Oppenheimer said in a client note that earnings of certain major banks, including Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley, are expected to be pressured amid broader concerns around capital markets revenue. Treasury yields were down early Tuesday, with the two-year rate retreating 2.1 basis points to 4.77% and the 10-year rate off 0.5 basis points to 5.19%. "With (third-quarter) earnings around the corner and the 10-year Treasury (greater than) 5.2% we think the debate around net interest income (NII) versus net interest margin (NIM) is becoming increasingly relevant for bank investors, and is largely centered in the regionals space," UBS Securities said in a note emailed on Monday. UnitedHealth (UNH) shares rose 2.3% pre-bell as the health insurance giant raised its full-year earnings outlook. Johnson & Johnson (JNJ) decreased 1.1% as it reported its third-quarter results. Domino's Pizza (DPZ) and Albertsons (ACI) are also expected to release their financials before the opening bell. Federal Reserve Governor Christopher Waller, Richmond Fed President Thomas Barkin and Boston Fed President Susan Collins are slated to speak on Tuesday. The September existing home sales report is due at 10 am ET. Last month's consumer price index is due Wednesday, while September data on wholesale prices and retail sales post Thursday. West Texas Intermediate crude oil and Brent each fell nearly 2% to $91.90 and $104.55 a barrel. Spot gold edged up 0.4% to $4,207 per troy ounce, while bitcoin rose 0.9% to $83,366.
