ATOM Jumps 11% as Short Sellers Feel the Heat: Could Cosmos Rally Further?

  • Cosmos surged 11%, driven by stronger sentiment, social attention, and leveraged positioning.
  • Bears lost $1.28 million as rising ATOM prices triggered significant short liquidations.
  • Negative funding and $1.14 million exchange inflows could limit further gains without stronger spot demand.

Cosmos has delivered a sharp surprise while the wider crypto market struggles. ATOM jumped 11% over the past day, attracting fresh trader attention. The rally pushed ATOM higher despite weak broader market conditions. Stronger capital inflows and improving sentiment helped support the move. However, derivatives data presents a mixed picture for bulls. Short sellers suffered heavy losses during the surge. Meanwhile, negative funding and exchange inflows could create fresh selling pressure soon.

Short Sellers Take Heavy Losses

ATOM’s latest rally came alongside stronger social interest and market sentiment. CoinMarketCap’s Sentiment indicator climbed to 4.0 on its scale. The metric ranges from -10 to 10 when measuring market consensus. A positive reading shows that bullish views currently outweigh bearish opinions. ATOM’s Mindshare also increased by 13% during the past day. More than 3,100 related posts appeared across social channels.

Rising attention can attract fresh traders and strengthen short-term momentum. However, social activity alone cannot guarantee another price increase. The derivatives market provided another major catalyst for ATOM. Open Interest climbed 14% to approximately $121.02 million. Rising Open Interest shows greater leveraged participation among derivatives traders. However, the metric does not reveal whether traders favor longs or shorts.

Liquidation data offered a clearer picture of the rally. Short traders lost roughly $1.28 million during the past day. Long traders suffered only around $14,300 in losses. That large imbalance shows how sharply the move caught bears off guard. Forced short closures can sometimes fuel additional upward momentum. Traders may rush to exit positions as prices move against them. Such activity can create another layer of buying pressure for ATOM.

Can ATOM Extend the Rally?

Despite the strong move, several warning signs remain visible. ATOM’s Funding Rate fell into negative territory on August 14. The rate reached approximately -0.0158% during the latest reading. Negative funding means short traders pay fees to long traders. Such positioning suggests bearish demand remains active within perpetual contracts. However, funding rates cannot confirm the exact balance between long positions.

Spot Netflow also remained positive for two consecutive days. Around $1.14 million worth of ATOM entered exchanges during that period. Positive netflow means deposits exceeded withdrawals across tracked platforms. Exchange inflows can create additional supply when holders prepare to sell. Traders may also deposit tokens simply for portfolio management.

Still, the combination deserves attention after ATOM’s 11% surge. Strong spot demand could help absorb tokens entering exchanges. Continued strength could also trigger another wave of short liquidations. For now, ATOM faces a battle between bullish momentum and rising supply risks. Bulls need sustained demand to protect the recent gains. If buyers maintain control, Cosmos could extend the recovery.

Democrats to destroy the data center boom? Goldman Sachs bucks the trend with an upgrade forecast!

Goldman Sachs has raised its forecast for US data center construction spending against the trend, increasing the 2026 projection from $67 billion to $80 billion and, for the first time, projecting $125 billion for 2028. Despite the market panic caused by Texas's moratorium, Goldman Sachs believes this is essentially a delay rather than a termination, and the overall construction cycle remains resilient. However, highly leveraged developers face substantial risks from rising financing costs and contract cancellations.
